Doing a great job of asking questions. Want to make more room for writing.
Improvements for next week
- Get ready to leave the office at 5, so that I leave by 6 and get home by 7.30
Daily routines for better sleep hygiene
I have a history of struggling with sleep when there’s a lot going on for me at work. And starting a new job definitely falls into that category. So I’ve been taking care to practise good sleep hygiene over the last few weeks. And I’ve been tweaking things here and there to help me further.
I switched my phone to greyscale to make it less interesting to look at, and it’s really decreased the amount of time I spend looking at it.
Weekday evenings
- Put phone in flight mode
- Meditate (free & freemium apps)
- just one minute meditation using One Moment Meditation
- Insight Timer meditations
- Listen to music
- songs for sleeping playlist
- Read fiction
- On Beauty by Zadie Smith
Making this list helped me avoid watching Netflix
On meditation
I’ve been meditating daily since Saturday 28/09. I started using a mood tracker app called Daylio and set a goal to meditate daily. And I’ve been using guided meditations from One Moment Meditation and Insight Timer apps, including walking meditations. Pretty amazing.
On minimising my viewing of screens
I decided over the previous weekend that I wouldn’t watch tv on weekdays, and then I refined that on Monday morning to only watch tv on Saturdays.
That evening I happened across Matt D’Avella’s video about Digital Minimalism, talk about synchronicity!
I’d decided to watch videos about writing on my way home. And then I broadened that to consuming whatever media I want, except tv shows. From YouTube videos, to podcasts, audiobooks, music and so on. Anything to support my learning, and music’s fine too. So, I queued up a bunch of things.
It’s not all been smooth sailing. Here’s an entry from Wednesday
Biggest issue with sleep is having too much stuff whirling around my mind, either due to excitement/anxiety or worry/planning. Meditating helps, but not all the way. Being exhausted by the end of the day helped too, on Monday.
But Tuesday and Wednesday here I am on my phone in the middle of the night.
Having flight mode on means I’m writing, rather than in a social media hole or web frenzy, but that’s still not sleeping…
What I watched this week
