On discipline
On books
I finished reading The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid. Loved it. Also, realised this isn’t the first book I’ve read by him – I read, and loved, Exit West a while ago. Hurray!
I decided to start a library at work. Pretty excited. Send me your recommendations for agile and related texts! Other resources welcome too.
So far, recommendations I’ve received include:
- Eric Reis’ Lean Startup
- The Mom Test by Fitzpatrick
- And some others that aren’t in a readily copy-pasteable format from Rich and Sharon
And then I bought loads of second-hand novels from eBay, and a couple of tree books. Excitedly waiting for them to arrive.
Even cancelled my Audiobooks.com and YouTube Premium subscriptions so I can budget more for paperbacks in the near future. 😅
I love trees
Sunday, went for a hike. Walked for 4.5 hours. Such a lovely day. So achy now, so pleased to be getting more active. Nice to see some friendly folks.
Healthier habits
I stayed out late twice this week, and of course it disrupted my sleeping and waking cycle. Not as much as I expected, I thought, at first. But it did kick me out of my healthier habits, so a bigger impact than I felt initially.
In getting back to bedtime…
Still, I did search for and start listening to bedtime stories, so there’s that.
And I’m glad that I stuck to my decision to sleep in when I don’t get enough sleep.
In tasty new habits…
Made hot chocolate and it’s deliciously savoury and rich. So much more satisfying than sweetened chocolate milk. Here’s a list of the ingredients:
- Cocoa, 1½ dessertspoon
- Bicarbonate of soda, dash
- Maca powder, 1 teaspoon
- Turmeric powder, ½ teaspoon
- Black pepper, dash (2 turns of grinder)
- Ginger powder, ½ teaspoon
- Vanilla powder, ⅓ teaspoon
- Mixed spice, 1 teaspoon
- Cayenne pepper, dash x 3
- Soya milk, unsweetened
Want to make it with more ginger and more vanilla once I’ve restocked. 🥰
It was really nice playing with making recipes again, and I definitely want to get back to cooking when it feels more feasible for me. Drooling over some of the ideas in lunalovecow.com lately.
And, recipes:
In physical activity…
I want to move more. I do yin yoga at work most Thursdays, and this week I did a dance class on Friday too. It was really fun and it felt great to be more active.
Writing…
Met up with my writing group this week. Our programme has finished, but we decided to keep meeting to support each other with feedback. We started by writing something and I’m surprised by how resistant I was. Did it though. Not sure how and when to make time for writing at the moment. Something to ponder over the holiday break.
What next?
Physical activity
- Dancing weekly at work (when feasible)
- Look for zumba and pilates classes near work
- Schedule at least one walk per month, preferably two
- Continue yin yoga weekly at work (when feasible)
Food
I remembered in the past that I focused on one element of the Daily Dozen each month, for a while. Planning to do that again. For December, going for beans!
- Eat at least one portion of pulses daily
- Seek out and eat fruit
- Track what I’m eating in the Daily Dozen app
Other stuff
- Monthly check how saving for housing is going
- Remember to work out how to include writing into my day-to-day life
This week in audio
Found this piece and the artist via TwoSetViolin’s review video: Classical Musicians React to Remixes of Classical Music. And I love it.
Actually considering purchasing this Classical Remixes album, not bought an album in ages…! Also, I thought I didn’t like trance, but apparently I do.
